Seven straight answers about IICT Lucknow.

People searching for IICT — the Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade — keep asking the same seven questions. Each one gets the direct answer first, then the reasoning. Where the honest answer is “no” or “it depends on a document”, we say so.

Q-01

Is IICT UGC approved?

Short answer

No — and it does not claim to be. IICT is an autonomous institute, not a university, and UGC entitlement attaches to universities. Where a UGC degree is what you need, IICT’s role is distance learning centre for a university that holds the entitlement.

IICT has worked out of Lucknow since 1997; its constitution is that of a society under the 1860 Act. It does two distinct things, and the UGC question lands differently on each. First, it grants its own diplomas — UGC purview stops short of these, as the institute itself will tell you. Second, it holds the centre role on the UGC-entitled distance MBA that Swami Vivekanand Subharti University awards — on that route the university, not the institute, is the body the UGC question applies to.

So the useful reframe is: which of the two routes are you looking at? If you are unsure how the approval instruments differ in general, the main site covers it in UGC-DEB vs AICTE.

Q-02

Is an IICT diploma valid?

Short answer

It is a genuine award from a registered institute running since 1997. But it is a diploma, not a degree — and where a written rule names a degree, only a degree satisfies it.

“Valid” only means something against a specific requirement, so ask: valid for what? Where the next step is judged on capability — most private-sector hiring, a promotion case, running your own business — an institute’s award stands on the institute’s standing, and IICT’s is a matter of record: nearly three decades of operation as a registered society.

Where the next step is governed by a rulebook — a government job notification, a university admission rule, an employer policy that spells out “degree” — an autonomous diploma will not clear it, however good the teaching was. That is not a defect of IICT; it is what the word “diploma” means in a rulebook. In that situation take the degree route from the start, because a diploma cannot simply be converted into a degree later.

Q-03

Who awards the degree if I study through IICT?

Short answer

Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut, which carries NAAC A accreditation. IICT teaches and supports; examining, entitlement and the degree stay with the university.

On the degree route, the programme is the university’s two-year distance MBA — a degree with UGC entitlement, taken as a dual specialisation: pick a pair from Strategic Management, Operations Management, Finance, Marketing and Human Resource Management. Both years together run to ₹65,000.

IICT’s part is the distance learning centre role: teaching, mentoring and study support through the programme. Those are two separate jobs held by two separate bodies, and the certificate you finish with carries the university’s name. If any counsellor blurs that line in either direction, treat it as a warning sign.

Q-04

Is a diploma worth less than a degree?

Short answer

Not automatically. The IIMs spent their first decades as registered societies, and the credential they conferred was the PGDM, a diploma pitched at the post-graduate rung — degree powers came to them only with the IIM Act in 2018 — yet no one marked an IIM diploma down for it.

The IIM precedent is the honest way to think about award types. For decades the most sought-after management qualification in India was a diploma from a registered society, because what carried it was the institution behind it, not the instrument. The instrument only starts to matter where a written rule names one specifically — and there the rule wins, every time.

So the working test is the same one from Q-02: rulebook, take the degree; capability, weigh the institution. The main site walks through the same distinction for PGDMs generally in Is a PGDM the same as an MBA?

Q-05

Will employers accept an IICT qualification?

Short answer

Employers on the institute’s record span mainstream corporate India and the public sector — Reliance, HDFC, Tata, the Indian Army and ICICI.

That list tells you the acceptance pattern: hiring judged case by case, with no rulebook barrier in most of the private sector. It is not a placement guarantee, and no institute’s list is.

Q-06

Are IICT and Subharti University the same body?

Short answer

No. IICT is an autonomous institute in Lucknow; Swami Vivekanand Subharti University is a university in Meerut. The body named on the certificate is the awarding body.

This distinction settles most confusion about IICT in one move. The institute teaches, mentors and supports. The university holds the UGC entitlement, examines, and awards the degree. IICT’s own diplomas are its own awards; the university’s degrees are the university’s. Before paying anyone anything, ask one question in writing: which body awards the qualification I will hold at the end? The answer should come back without hesitation.

Q-07

What does the Amity MoU with IICT mean?

Short answer

Collaboration between two institutions, nothing further. No qualification a student holds arises from it.

An academic MoU links IICT and Amity University. It is an agreement about how the two bodies work together — not a qualification route, and no certificate a student receives flows from it. If a memorandum of this kind is presented to you anywhere as if it were an accreditation or an award, that presentation is wrong, whoever makes it.
